By, LeShawnda Fitzgerald

¡Feliz día de San Patricio! Here at Ready For Spanish, we are excited to celebrate this festive holiday with you and your children. St. Patrick’s Day is a fun and exciting time to introduce your kids to the Spanish language and culture. Here are five ways to celebrate this holiday with your kids while learning Spanish:

Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt with your kids and keep an eye out for these Spanish words: verde (green), arcoiris (rainbow), trébol (clover), suerte (luck), and fiesta (party). Feel free to add other Spanish words related to St. Patrick’s Day or Spanish culture.

St. Patrick’s Day Vocabulary

Introduce your kids to St. Patrick’s Day vocabulary in Spanish. You can teach them phrases like “Feliz día de San Patricio” (Happy St. Patrick’s Day) and “trébol de cuatro hojas” (four-leaf clover).  There’s even more inside our online Spanish program for kids and families.

Learn About the Irish-Mexican Connection

Did you know there is actually an Irish-Mexican connection? During the Mexican-American War, a group of Irish soldiers defected from the US army and fought for Mexico. Today, there are many Irish-Mexican descendants living in Mexico. Use this as an opportunity to teach your kids about cultural exchange and diversity.

Cooking

Cook a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish with a Spanish twist. For example, you can make corned beef and cabbage empanadas or add a Spanish twist to Irish soda bread by adding chorizo or manchego cheese.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with your kids while learning Spanish can be a fun and educational experience. From scavenger hunts to cooking, there are many ways to incorporate Spanish language and culture into your St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
